B1 or B licence: which one should you choose for a quadricycle?

B1, available from age 16, covers non-light quadricycles within the applicable limits. A B licence, available from age 18, also covers cars within its own limits. For a particular quadricycle, first check its approved category: you may not need to choose between two licences.

What B1 and B cover

B1 and B are different categories. B1 covers non-light quadricycles with technical limits set by law and is available from age 16. B allows cars within its authorised mass and passenger limits and has a minimum age of 18. A B licence also provides certain specific entitlements in Italy, but that does not turn every light vehicle into a car. To identify what you may drive, compare the category on the vehicle document with the category on your licence.

A microcar may be approved as a light quadricycle, non-light quadricycle or another vehicle category. An L6e vehicle may raise an AM question; an L7e is a non-light quadricycle, while a valid B licence may cover it under the applicable rules. Do not rely on the sales name, external dimensions or number of seats. The registration document contains the relevant information; ask the seller for the certificate of conformity for the exact vehicle.

Choosing for your needs

If you want to drive only a non-light quadricycle and are at least 16, B1 may be the relevant route. If you also want to drive cars, B offers a broader scope but requires the minimum age and its own process. Someone who already holds B does not need to obtain B1 merely because they are buying a quadricycle; still check the classification and conditions of that vehicle, including restrictions or adaptations.

Before enrolling, consider which vehicle you will use and ask the licensing office or driving school about exams and documents. Depending on the categories already held, MIT may allow a B1 route without a new theory test, but practical driving remains required. Do not choose a category only because it seems easier or a seller suggested it. After obtaining a licence, check the codes and restrictions printed on it.
