Requirements
When must a driving-licence medical visit take place at the CML?
The CML handles specified clinical conditions, special licences and category or age cases; ask your doctor whether it applies to you.
A Local Medical Commission (CML) visit is required in specified cases, including clinical situations that may raise doubts about fitness, special licences and certain categories or age thresholds. An authorised doctor or the UMC can tell you which process applies after reviewing your circumstances.
Cases handled by the commission
MIT distinguishes authorised doctors who assess applicants individually from CMLs, which include several doctors. Referral to a CML is provided for clinical situations that may raise doubts about fitness, special licences for people with certain physical disabilities and some category C or D holders above specified age thresholds. The requirement therefore depends on the medical situation and the category requested; do not assume that every B applicant or every older driver must automatically attend a commission.
A certifying doctor may refer you if the information from the visit needs a collective assessment. For some conditions, a specialist may be part of the commission under applicable rules. Ask why you are being referred, which office is responsible and which reports are needed. A CML appointment is not itself a finding that you are unfit: the commission reviews the evidence and decides whether to issue the certificate, potentially with conditions or a shorter validity period.
Prepare for the CML visit
Book with the competent commission and follow the document list it sends. It may request identification, your current licence for a renewal, a photo, receipts and recent reports connected to the reason for assessment. Documents vary by case, so do not treat another person’s checklist as definitive. If you have not received clear instructions, contact the secretariat before the appointment.
A CML visit may also be required for certain renewal procedures. Rules for any temporary permit are separate and apply only under MIT-defined conditions. Do not treat a booking as permission to drive after your licence expires. Medical follow-up and theory study serve different purposes: the app helps you study, while the commission assesses fitness under official criteria.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps review theory through chapters, quizzes, explanations, mistake review and statistics; the CML assesses medical fitness.
