Category B and powerful tricycles: what is the minimum age?
You must be at least 21 to ride a tricycle over 15 kW under category B.
A category B licence also authorises motor tricycles; for tricycles with power above 15 kW, the driver must be at least 21. Check the vehicle’s power and classification and make sure the licence is valid.
Power sets the age threshold
The Italian Highway Code provides that category B also covers motor tricycles. For a tricycle with power above 15 kW, the holder must be at least 21 years old. This threshold is separate from engine displacement: a tricycle is not covered by the 125 cc rule for certain A1 motorcycles that can be ridden in Italy with B.
Check the vehicle’s power and category in its documents. The sales term “tricycle” can be used for vehicles with different approvals; a three-wheel appearance alone does not establish the licence category. If power is exactly 15 kW, the wording “above 15 kW” does not trigger this age threshold, but the other licence and vehicle conditions still need checking. For an imported model or unclear figures, ask the UMC or consult the type approval before using it.
Consider safe riding as well
Being 21 and holding a valid B licence meets the age requirement for a tricycle above 15 kW, but general obligations still apply. The vehicle must be registered and insured and meet road-use requirements; the driver must comply with helmet and protective-equipment rules where applicable, as well as speed limits and other road rules.
A tricycle can handle and remain stable differently from a car or motorcycle. Before riding in heavy traffic or at higher speeds, get familiar with its controls, braking and dimensions in a safe place, while following the rules for practice. If the tricycle is used in a professional activity or to carry passengers, check additional requirements connected with that use. Category B and the minimum age answer the question about the driving entitlement, not every operational requirement for the vehicle.
