With A1 or A2, do I have to retake the theory test for category B?

MIT rules allow holders of A1, A2, A or B1 to be exempt from the B theory test; the requirements and practical test still apply.

If you already hold A1, A2, A or B1, you may obtain category B without repeating its theory test under the MIT procedure. You still have to apply, meet the requirements and pass the category B practical test.

The exemption covers the theory test

The Ministry of Transport page lists categories A1, A2, A and B1 among those that allow a candidate to obtain B through the practical test alone. This is an exemption from the B theory exam; it does not grant a licence automatically, remove the application procedure or let you drive a car before the new category has been obtained.

Check that the category you hold appears on your licence and that the document is valid. Submit the application according to the UMC (local Motorizzazione) or driving school instructions and provide the required documents. The office may check your record and the category registered. If your licence was issued abroad, is being renewed or has special endorsements, ask how it is recognised before booking. Exemption from one exam does not remove medical, administrative or practical requirements.

Prepare for the category B practical test

Even without a new theory quiz, you must demonstrate during the practical test that you can drive category B vehicles safely. The test concerns a car and the manoeuvres and situations expected for that category; previous motorcycle experience does not automatically make you familiar with a car. Arrange practice with an instructor and follow the requirements in force for your learner permit.

Before attending, check the booking, documents and vehicle accepted for the test. If you only hold an A category and have not studied the road rules as applied to cars, fill those gaps: right of way, road position, signs and safe conduct depend on the situation. An exemption from a quiz does not mean that there is no theory to apply while driving. The outcome depends on the test and examiner’s assessment, not on the category you already hold.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review B theory through chapters, exam quizzes, explanations, mistake review and study statistics.

Yes. You need them to drive and to complete the practical test, even when you do not have to retake the theory exam.
