B licence renewal: how the interval changes with age

An ordinary B licence is renewed at different intervals by age; a medical examination may set a shorter period.

MIT lists ordinary B renewals every 10 years up to age 50, every 5 up to 70, every 3 up to 80 and every 2 after 80; medical conditions can shorten the interval.

Age bands for a category B licence

An ordinary B licence has validity periods that change with the holder's age. MIT lists: every 10 years until age 50; every 5 years until 70; every 3 years until 80; and every 2 years after turning 80. These bands describe the standard renewal frequency, not a guaranteed validity period for every individual licence. Check the expiry date printed on your document and the instructions given at your medical examination.

For example, a driver aged 52 falls in the five-year standard renewal band, while after turning 71 the standard interval is three years. A fitness examination is still required; renewal does not become optional. If the doctor or commission sets a shorter period because of an individual condition, follow that personal expiry date even if the ordinary age band would allow a longer interval.

Exceptions, the actual date and preparation

The interval also depends on licence category and medical route. For licences renewed after an examination by a local medical commission (CML) or certain local health authority specialists, birthday alignment may not apply. The CML may set a limited validity based on its assessment; do not calculate the date from birth year alone. C and D categories have different renewal intervals from B.

Check the date on the front of the licence, book the examination in time and bring the documents requested by the doctor. If an authorised doctor completes the renewal and the outcome is positive, the temporary receipt has the conditions stated by MIT; check those instructions for your specific case.
