Taking your driving test at the Motorisation Office as a private candidate

How to organise your application, tests and vehicle when you choose to obtain a category B licence without enrolling in a driving school.

A private candidate submits the application to the Motorisation Office, prepares for theory and practice and follows the local booking process. The practical test requires a suitable vehicle and compliant arrangements.

What being a private candidate means

A private candidate submits an application directly to the Motorisation Office without enrolling in a driving school for the whole process. This may reduce some paid services, but it does not remove the requirements: medical, documents, payments, tests and an exam vehicle are still necessary. Each UMC organises its own appointment dates and counter procedures, so follow local notices.

First, consult the MIT category B guidance and download the current TT2112 form. Submit your ID, tax code, medical receipt and required PagoPA payments. Check how your office books the theory test and communicates the result; submitting an application does not automatically confirm a test session.

Theory and learner's permit

You can study theory independently using manuals and quizzes, but choose materials that match the current official syllabus. After you pass, the UMC issues a learner's permit and you can begin practice subject to the rules for accompanying drivers, vehicles, signs and permitted roads. Record the expiry date and book the practical test in good time.

If an application or result does not appear correctly, keep the receipt and contact the office. The number of attempts and deadlines depend on the rules in force and your application. Do not rely on an old post or video describing a previous schedule.

Arrange a car for the test

The vehicle must meet the test requirements and have the required equipment. Ask the UMC whether you can use a family car and what technical features it requires; alternatively, arrange with a driving school to use its car and help book the practical test. MIT has clarified that a private candidate may use a driving school for the test, but the registration on the test list must be completed correctly.

If you use a school's car, clarify whether the service covers only the vehicle or also accompaniment, booking and administration. It is not enough to turn up with a relative who holds a licence: the vehicle and accompanying person must both meet the test requirements. Ask for written confirmation of responsibilities and costs.

Decide how much support you need

The private route works if you can organise deadlines, practice and bookings. You can still ask an instructor for individual lessons to improve manoeuvres or address gaps; you do not need to buy a complete course to get targeted help. Compare costs and time honestly instead of assuming that doing everything yourself is always cheaper.
