Private candidate: can you rent a car for the category B test?

A standard rental may not have the required dual controls: check the vehicle, instructor and insurance before booking.

A private candidate can arrange a car for the B test, but it must meet MIT requirements, including dual controls; insurance conditions and the required instructor must also be in place. A standard rental car is not automatically suitable.

A rental car must be suitable for the test

The category B practical test must use a vehicle that meets Ministry requirements. MIT lists a category B car with dual controls and the ability to reach the required speed. Ordinary rental cars are generally intended for everyday travel and may lack the additional controls; the rental agreement may also restrict use for tests or examinations.

Before paying a deposit, ask whether the rental company has a vehicle specifically equipped and accepted by the UMC for a driving test. Check the transmission, vehicle documents, inspection status and insurance for the candidate, examiner and instructor. Dual controls alone do not guarantee compliance with every technical or local procedural requirement. Ask the test centre to confirm that a private candidate may present that vehicle.

Compare with a driving-school vehicle

Even if you find a suitable car, clarify who supplies the authorised instructor and handles the documents. MIT rules require an instructor to sit next to the candidate and the vehicle to meet test requirements. A rental without an instructor or permission to participate in the examination may leave you without a usable car on test day.

Ask for a written quote that separates vehicle, instructor, insurance, delivery and test arrangements. Check the cancellation terms if the UMC postpones the exam and who is responsible if the vehicle is deemed unsuitable. A driving-school car may be easier to organise because it is already used for tests, but compare service and price rather than assuming it is always cheaper. Do not drive the vehicle to the test if the rental contract or insurance does not permit the candidate to drive it.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you prepare B theory with chapters, exam quizzes, mistake review and statistics. It does not provide a car or instructor for the practical test.
