Category B test as a private candidate with someone else’s car: required declarations

Before the test, check the owner’s declaration, vehicle eligibility and instructor requirements with the UMC organising the exam.

A private candidate may present a vehicle supplied by a third party only if it meets category B test requirements and the Motorizzazione receives the declaration required for that case. Confirm the form, documents and instructor with the UMC before booking.

The vehicle must qualify and be formally available

MIT’s category B page sets minimum features for the test vehicle, including dual controls and required performance. If someone else owns the car, their willingness to lend it does not automatically make it eligible. The UMC must be able to verify the car is accepted and that its owner has authorised its use for the test.

Ask the office for the current model of the substitute declaration or permission to provide. Check who must sign it, whether the owner’s identity document must be attached and which vehicle papers must be shown. Do not use a form found randomly online or a generic letter if the UMC requires specific wording. Insurance must also cover use during the test and driving by the candidate.

Complete the check before booking

Get confirmation that the car meets the technical requirements, the declaration has been accepted and the required authorised instructor will be present. A family relationship does not replace permission or insurance cover. If a driving school supplies the car, ask whether it will handle the declaration or whether you remain responsible.

Keep a copy of the signed declaration, the owner’s identity document, vehicle certificate, insurance and UMC confirmation. Also check the transmission type and details in the booking: a different vehicle may require an update to the application. Do not wait until test day to learn that a signature is missing or the car was not registered as suitable. Confirming in advance protects both candidate and owner and reduces the chance of postponement due to incomplete documents.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps with category B theory through chapters, exam quizzes, mistake review and statistics. Check the third-party car’s eligibility and declarations with the UMC.

Frequently asked questions

Is the owner’s verbal permission enough?

No. The UMC may require a formal declaration, as well as an eligible car, documents and insurance cover.

Can I bring the declaration on test day?

Ask the UMC beforehand when and how it wants to receive it; the document may need to be linked to your booking.
