Category B test as a private candidate: who can provide the car?

A third party’s car may be used if it meets test requirements and the UMC accepts the procedure and documents.

For the category B practical test, the car must meet the Ministry’s requirements, including dual controls. If someone else owns it, first check with the UMC which documents, equipment and presentation procedure are required.

Dual controls are a requirement for the test vehicle

Taking the test as a private candidate does not remove the vehicle requirements. For the category B practical test, the car must have the characteristics required by MIT, including the specified dual controls so that an instructor can intervene if necessary. An ordinary privately owned car is not automatically suitable for the test, even if it is roadworthy.

If you plan to use a car owned by a relative or another person, ask the UMC organising your test what conditions apply to a vehicle provided by a third party. It may require vehicle documents, the owner’s formal consent, suitable insurance and an authorised instructor present. Do not assume that private ownership or an informal permission is enough. Confirm the technical requirements and local procedure before booking or arriving on the test day.

Arrange the car before the test date

Agree with the owner that the car will be available on the day and check that its inspection, insurance and documents are valid. Make sure its controls have not been altered and that the dual controls work. If the vehicle has been adapted for a candidate with specific needs, different requirements may apply; follow the authorisation and agree the arrangements with the UMC.

A car lent for practice is not necessarily a car that can be used for the test. Practice follows the learner permit and accompanying-driver rules; the test has separate requirements for the vehicle and the person present. To avoid a wasted booking, get confirmation or follow the office’s official instructions, then bring the required documents. If you cannot make a third-party car suitable, consider using a car provided by a driving school. The decision depends on its technical features and the procedure, not only on an agreement between candidate and owner.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use any car lent by a family member?

Is the owner’s permission letter enough?

Not necessarily. Check with the UMC which documents, insurance, technical requirements and instructor presence apply.
