Documents and registration
Driving-licence application: what if your documents show different surnames?
If your application and documents show different surnames, prepare official proof linking them and ask the UMC which copies it needs.
If your documents show different surnames, do not alter them by hand. Bring an official record linking the details and ask the UMC which originals and copies to include.
Explain the difference with official records
Your name and surname must let the office match the application, identity document, tax code and medical certificate to the same person. A difference may follow marriage, a legal name change, transliteration, surname order or documents issued at different times. Do not edit the wording on documents yourself and do not assume the UMC can infer the link from your date of birth alone.
Gather a valid identity document and the relevant official record, such as a civil-status certificate or decision confirming the change. If the difference comes from a foreign document, ask the office whether it needs a translation, legalisation or other proof; the answer depends on the document and circumstances. The MIT lists the basic category B documents, but resolving inconsistent personal details may require guidance from the competent UMC.
Clarify the file before submitting
Before your appointment, send a short enquiry that identifies the application and asks which originals to show and which copies to submit. If a driving school is assisting you, show it the documents, but confirm the requirements with the office that will receive the file. Bring originals for inspection and legible copies; keep a copy of your question and the response. If the application is already open and the office flags a mismatch, follow its notice and send the supplement with the protocol reference.
For example, an identity card may show a new surname while an older certificate carries the former one. An official record of the change allows the office to connect the details; a note written by the applicant does not replace that evidence. Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you revise category B quizzes, explanations and wrong answers, but it cannot correct identity documents or registry data.

Frequently asked questions
Can I write the correct surname by hand on a copy?
No. Do not alter official documents. Bring the official record explaining the difference and ask the UMC how to submit it.
Does every foreign document need a certified translation?
That depends on the document. Ask the UMC whether it requires translation, legalisation or other formalities.
