Can you apply for a driving licence with an expired ID?

The MIT requires a valid identity document for a category B application. Renew it before submitting your file, and check that it is still valid when you identify yourself at the examinations.

The identity document must be valid

The MIT category B application page requires a valid identity document to be shown, together with a copy. An expired document does not meet that requirement: a readable photocopy or memorised number does not extend its validity. Before booking a counter appointment, check the expiry date and start renewal with the issuing authority. If the document has been lost or renewal is pending, ask the UMC which temporary proof it accepts for your specific application; do not assume a renewal receipt is enough.

Also check the document you will use to identify yourself on the examination day. Submitting the application with a valid ID does not guarantee that the same document will remain valid months later. If you renew it in the meantime, bring the new one and ask the school or office whether your record needs updating. A health card or tax code can identify your tax number, but it does not replace the required identity document.

Prepare your application file

Before submitting, compare name, surname, date and place of birth across the ID, tax code and application. If they do not match, clarify the reason with the UMC before filing. Bring the valid original for inspection and prepare the complete copy requested. The MIT page also lists proof of medical fitness and other attachments; follow the current version because instructions can change.

If you are applying independently, check whether the local office requires an appointment. If a driving school is assisting you, send a scan of the renewed ID and ask which original to bring.
