Category B as a private candidate: which costs remain mandatory?
Private candidates still pay for the medical visit and fees, required certified practice and access to a suitable test car.
Being a private candidate avoids an entire driving-school package, but does not remove the medical visit, PagoPA fees, required certified practice or the need for a suitable test car. Separate these items before estimating the total cost.
Separate public fees from services
A category B application involves administrative payments listed by MIT and a medical visit whose cost depends on the provider and doctor. Check the current fee schedule and what stage each payment covers: application, theory or practical test may require separate codes and payments.
As a private candidate, you must also plan the certified practical exercises required for category B under the rules applicable to your authorisation. Instructor-led practice, including the conditions specified in the applicable programme, costs separately from the test fee and theory study. Ask for a quote that specifies the number and type of sessions, required certification and included services; check with the UMC or driving school which regime applies to your learner permit date.
Include the vehicle and test arrangements
The practical test vehicle must meet Ministry requirements, including dual controls. You may need to pay for use of the car, the instructor’s presence and booking services through a driving school. An ordinary private car or standard rental may not qualify. Ask in advance what the service includes and whether a further attempt creates another test-car or service charge.
Build your budget by adding the medical visit, fees, certified lessons, car and any support you choose; do not assume every item is included in an advertised price. Keep receipts and check current fees before paying. Do not reuse a payment with a different fee code without confirmation. The app may reduce the cost of revision materials if you already have it, but it does not replace an instructor, certified hours or a test car.
