AM practical test: choosing a moped or light quadricycle
For the AM practical test, you can choose an eligible two-wheel or three-wheel moped, or a light quadricycle.
For the AM practical test, you can choose a two-wheel moped, a three-wheel moped or a light quadricycle; you must tell the office which vehicle you will use when booking.
The vehicle options listed by the MIT
Candidates do not all have to take the AM practical test on the same type of vehicle. The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MIT) allows a two-wheel moped, a three-wheel moped or a light quadricycle. The vehicle must belong to the category and meet the requirements for the test: a commercial label such as scooter or microcar is not enough. Check its approval documents and registration certificate, since the model name, body shape and engine size alone do not establish its legal category.
You state your choice in the application and confirm it when booking the practical test. The MIT specifies the available options as two wheels, three wheels or a light quadricycle. This lets the office organise the test using the relevant vehicle type. If you switch from a moped to a microcar before booking, tell the person handling your application and check that the change has been entered into the system. Arriving with a different vehicle from the one recorded can create an administrative and practical problem on test day.
How to make a practical choice
Choose a vehicle you can practise on regularly and safely, with guidance from your instructor or driving school. If you already ride an automatic scooter, familiarity may help you maintain balance and direction, but it does not make the test easier or mean that the examiner assesses only vehicle control. If you choose a quadricycle, practise with its dimensions, steering and turning space. The vehicle choice does not remove the rules of the road you need to know, and it does not change the requirement to pass the theory and practical tests for AM.
Before booking, write down the vehicle category, transmission, availability and how the vehicle will be brought to the test. Ask the driving school or motorisation office to confirm the requirements, and read the appointment notice for local instructions. Do not rely on details from another candidate’s experience. Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review common road rules through chapters, quizzes, explanations, mistake review and study statistics.

Frequently asked questions
Can I choose my vehicle on the day of the test?
You must state your choice when booking the practical test, rather than leaving it until test day. If you need to change it, contact the office or driving school in advance and confirm that the application has been updated.
Can I use any microcar?
No. It must be an eligible light quadricycle and meet the MIT category and vehicle requirements. Check the registration certificate and vehicle documents.
