Getting your licence
AM licence in Italy: age, documents and exams
In Italy, you can apply for AM at 14. The process includes theory and practical tests, and a parent or guardian signs for minors.
In Italy, you can apply for an AM licence from age 14. A parent or guardian must also sign the application if you are a minor, and you must pass theory and practical tests.
Age and the AM application
In Italy, you can begin the AM licence process after turning 14. The application is filed with the civil motorisation office using form TT2112, and a driving school can help with the administrative steps. If you are under 18, you sign the form and your parent or legal guardian must sign it too. Prepare valid identification and a copy, your tax code or health card, proof of the required medical fitness visit, and the payments requested through PagoPA. The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MIT) lists the documents and the validity period for the medical receipt. Check the current official page before booking the visit, because the permitted period depends on the type of doctor or medical commission.
Submitting the form does not replace the exams. The AM process includes a theory test; after passing it, you receive a learner’s permit to practise and take the practical test. The MIT page currently allows two theory attempts within six months of the application and three practical attempts within eleven months counted from the month after the theory pass. These are maximum windows, not a promise that an appointment will be available immediately. Allow for the motorisation office’s booking process and plan your study early.
Theory, learner’s permit and practical test
For the practical AM test, you choose the vehicle when booking. It may be a two-wheel moped, a three-wheel moped or a light quadricycle that meets the applicable requirements. The application must identify the vehicle type and its transmission, manual or automatic; the information can be added or changed before the practical test is booked. If you change your choice, make sure the motorisation office has recorded the update and that the vehicle on test day matches the application. An AM licence issued in Italy at 14 should not be assumed to allow riding at 14 in every country: the MIT notes that the licence is valid for driving in the EU from age 16 unless an individual state recognises the lower age.
Use a practical checklist: signed form, personal documents, medical receipt, payment receipts, and the vehicle you selected. Ask the office or driving school to check the application before the test is booked. Then review right of way, signs, road position and rules that apply to light vehicles. Practical lessons with an instructor prepare you to handle the vehicle; studying theory cannot replace those lessons. Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review common road rules through chapters, quizzes, explanations, mistake review and study statistics.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review AM questions, explanations and common road rules; practical riding requires separate lessons.
Frequently asked questions
Can I ride throughout Europe at age 14?
Not automatically. Italy allows you to obtain AM at 14, but the MIT says that in the EU the licence is valid from age 16 unless the individual country recognises the lower age.
Does my parent have to sign if I use a driving school?
If you are a minor, the MIT requires both you and your parent or legal guardian to sign the application. A driving school may help with the paperwork, but it does not replace the required signature.
