Requirements
AM licence: which mopeds and microcars are eligible?
AM covers mopeds and light quadricycles within specific technical limits; passengers require the right age and approval.
The AM category covers mopeds up to 45 km/h and light quadricycles within limits for mass, speed and power. Carrying a passenger requires both approval for two people and a rider aged at least 16.
Mopeds and light quadricycles
An AM licence does not cover every scooter or small car. For two- and three-wheel mopeds, the MIT sets a maximum speed of 45 km/h, maximum capacity of 50 cc for combustion engines and maximum power of 4 kW. Light quadricycles have different limits: running-order mass no more than 425 kg, maximum speed 45 km/h, different capacity limits for spark-ignition and compression-ignition engines, and power limits that depend on the vehicle configuration. The MIT page also describes a light quadricycle as having two seats, including the driver’s.
Do not compare capacity alone. Speed, power and mass are separate measurements: a moped does not qualify as AM merely because it has less than 50 cc if its approved maximum speed is above the limit. Likewise, a microcar appearance does not prove that the vehicle is a light quadricycle. Check the category and technical data on the registration certificate for the exact model.
The passenger rule
Passenger transport has two cumulative conditions: the rider must have turned 16 and the vehicle must be approved for two people. A 14-year-old with an AM licence may ride within the category limits but cannot carry a passenger. Even after turning 16, the rider cannot carry another person in a vehicle registered for one seat. Approval, not the appearance of an extra saddle, determines whether a passenger is allowed.
If you are buying a moped or microcar, check its registration and approval documents. Ask a driving school or motorisation office if the category or seat count is unclear. Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you revise AM theory and explanations, but it cannot inspect the documents or verify a specific vehicle.
