Theory test
Already have a category B licence: do you need the A2 theory test?
Some existing licence categories allow access to A2 through the practical test alone. Check your current licence and the procedure first.
Under the MIT route, holders of certain categories including B can take the A2 practical test without repeating theory, provided the licence is valid and the current procedure applies.
When theory is not repeated
The MIT A2-A page allows holders of A1, B1, B or BE to access A2 by taking only the practical test. This avoids repeating the theory exam; it does not grant A2 automatically. You must submit an application, meet the age and medical requirements, and pass the required riding test.
For example, someone with a valid category B licence who is at least 18 can apply through the practical route described by MIT. A licence that is expired, suspended or outside the listed categories may not qualify. The office checks the actual licence record. If you have a foreign licence, a conversion in progress or a medical restriction, ask the licensing office how it affects your case before paying or booking.
What you still need to do
A practical-only route does not mean you can arrive unprepared. Practise on a vehicle that meets the category requirements and learn the manoeuvres, traffic rules and checks that can be assessed. The examiner evaluates your riding in the test context; there is no universal checklist of mistakes that guarantees failure in every case.
For the application, use the current MIT A2-A page and check the document list, including medical evidence and payments. Ask the driving school or office to confirm that your licence qualifies for the theory exemption and which vehicle you may use. If you plan to ride an automatic motorcycle only, also check code 78. If you want to use a manual motorcycle, choose a suitable test vehicle that will not add that restriction.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale can help you review theory quizzes and explanations for supported categories, revisit mistakes and follow your statistics.
Frequently asked questions
Does category B already let me ride an A2 motorcycle?
No. It can let you use the A2 practical-only route, but you still have to obtain A2 and pass the required test.
Do I need to be at least 18?
Yes. MIT lists 18 as the minimum age for A2. The other requirements and a successful practical test still apply.
