Requirements
A2 restricted motorcycle: which figures must you check?
A restricted bike must also meet the power-to-weight and original-version power limits for A2.
For A2, it is not enough for a restricted motorcycle to be within 35 kW. Check the 0.2 kW/kg ratio and that the original version did not exceed 70 kW.
Current power is only one part
An A2 motorcycle cannot exceed 35 kW, and its power-to-weight ratio cannot be higher than 0.2 kW/kg. There is also a restriction on the original version: the bike cannot derive from a version with more than twice the A2 maximum, or 70 kW. This distinguishes a model approved for that level from a more powerful motorcycle limited later. The power shown after a restriction does not answer every eligibility question.
The word “restricted” is not enough to establish the legal position. A model may have several variants, different original specifications or approved conversion options. Check the registration certificate for the recorded power and identify the original version and its approved data. Do not infer original power from a sales name or online advert. Electric motorcycles also require the power and ratio checks, even though they have no conventional engine capacity.
Examples and documents to compare
A motorcycle recorded at 35 kW and derived from a 68 kW version may meet the original-power condition, but you still need to check its ratio. A motorcycle restricted to 35 kW from an 80 kW version remains outside the A2 limit. If the registration certificate does not clearly identify the original variant, ask a motorisation office or driving school before purchasing or riding it.
The minimum motorcycle characteristics for the A2 practical test are separate from the limits that apply to motorcycles you may ride after qualification. Frequently asked questions
Is any motorcycle recorded at 35 kW allowed for A2?
No. Its ratio must not exceed 0.2 kW/kg, and its original version must not exceed 70 kW.
Can I rely on an advert saying “restricted”?
No. Compare the specific bike’s registration and approval records; an advert does not establish that every A2 condition is met.
