A licence at 20: when two years with A2 are enough

At 20, you may qualify for category A through the progressive route if you have held A2 for at least two years.

The age of 20 applies to progressive access to category A when you have held A2 for at least two years. You can follow the applicable practical test route or check the authorised gradual course; both age and licence history must be satisfied.

Age and time holding A2

Direct access to category A requires age 24. The progressive route allows access from age 20 if you have held an A2 licence for at least two years. The relevant period starts when A2 was obtained, not when you began riding or obtained a different licence. For example, someone who turns 20 but has held A2 for one year has not yet met the holding period. Someone with two years of A2 who is still 19 must wait until reaching the minimum age.

The MIT describes both access by practical test and gradual access through a course, each with its own conditions. Having held A2 for the required period does not complete the application and does not itself authorise you to ride category A vehicles. If your licence was converted, renewed or suspended, ask the licensing office which date and entitlement it recognises. Check medical fitness, fees and current documents before booking.

Test or gradual course

With the test route, you must pass the practical test on a motorcycle that meets the Ministry’s category A requirements. The gradual route instead requires a course at a driving school or authorised centre and completion of the steps set by MIT. These are different routes: the course provides and certifies the prescribed training, while an examiner assesses the practical test against the official programme.

Before choosing, ask the school or licensing office to check your licence and dates. Confirm that A2 is valid, two full years have elapsed and you are at least 20. The test motorcycle must meet the applicable requirements, and its transmission may affect licence codes. For gradual access, follow the authorised centre’s instructions and keep the course certificate. Until category A is issued, follow the restrictions attached to the licence you currently hold.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers theory quizzes, explanations, mistake review and study statistics; practical training and the authorised course require a qualified centre.

Frequently asked questions

I turn 20 tomorrow. Can I apply for A immediately?

Only if you have also held A2 for at least two years and meet the rest of the procedure. Age and holding period are cumulative requirements.

Is category A issued automatically at age 20?

No. You must complete an accepted route, either the practical test or an authorised gradual course, and the other required steps.
