A2 without an examination: gradual-access requirements
Gradual access to A2 requires age 18, A1 held for two years and a course at an authorised provider.
You can progress to A2 without an examination from age 18 if you have held A1 for at least two years and complete the required course at a driving school or authorised centre.
Age, A1 and the required course
The gradual route from A1 to A2 does not require an examination, but it is not automatic. The MIT requires applicants to be at least 18 and to have held an A1 licence for at least two years. You must also complete a specific course at a driving school or at an authorised driving instruction centre. The MIT says an A1 entitlement automatically recognised through a B licence for driving only in Italy does not qualify for this route.
The application is not the ordinary examination application. The driving school registers the learner and submits the gradual-access request through the Portale dell’Automobilista. If an instruction centre delivers the training, it does not replace the school in submitting the application. You need the learner’s permit issued after this specific gradual-access request; a permit issued for an A2 examination application cannot be substituted.
What to check before starting
The course covers technical motorcycle checks, safety preparation, specific manoeuvres and riding in traffic, following the MIT requirements. The school can explain how sessions are scheduled and what documents to bring. The motorcycle must meet the A2 training requirements, which should not be confused with the examination motorcycle requirements. Ask the school to confirm the bike’s data and transmission before the learner’s permit is issued.
Bring your A1 licence and ask the school to verify its issue date, type and validity. Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review common road rules through chapters, quizzes, explanations, mistake review and study statistics.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review theory chapters and common road rules through quizzes, explanations and error review. Practical training takes place with an authorised provider.
