Progressive A2 licence: how the course without an examination works
The gradual A2 route requires age 18, A1 held for two years and an authorised course.
The gradual route to A2 without an examination is available from age 18 if you have held A1 for at least two years and complete a specific course at a driving school or authorised centre.
Requirements to enrol
To progress gradually from A1 to A2 without an examination, the MIT requires you to be at least 18 and to have held A1 for at least two years. You must complete a specific course at a driving school or authorised driving instruction centre. Check the issue date of your A1 category: the two-year period runs from that date, not from when you started riding or enrolled at a school. The MIT states that A1 automatically recognised through a B licence for driving only in Italy does not qualify for this route.
The driving school registers the learner and submits the gradual-access application. This is different from the ordinary A2 examination application, and the learner’s permit must be issued in response to the specific gradual-access request. An instruction centre may deliver the training if authorised, but the school remains responsible for submitting the application.
Course content and completion
The course includes preparing and technically checking the motorcycle, safety manoeuvres and riding in traffic. The MIT describes the stages and required content; the school explains its schedule, motorcycle and documents. The training motorcycle must meet the requirements for the A2 course. Do not confuse it with the motorcycle required for an examination: the routes have different purposes and requirements. After the training is complete, the driving school submits the certificate and documents through the Portale dell’Automobilista.
If you are 19 and have held A1 for two years, you already meet the minimum age; still confirm that both requirements and the licence type are valid. Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review common road rules through chapters, quizzes, explanations, mistake review and study statistics.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review theory chapters and common road rules through quizzes, explanations and error review. Practical training takes place with an authorised provider.
