Getting your licence
Which existing licences allow only a practical test for A2 or A?
Holders of A1, B1, B or BE can obtain A2 or A by examination with only the practical test.
The MIT says holders of A1, B1, B or BE may obtain A2 or A by examination through the practical test alone. This theory exemption does not remove the application, documents or riding test.
Licence categories that exempt you from theory
The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport gives a specific rule: someone holding an A1, B1, B or BE licence may obtain A2 or A by taking only the practical driving test. The existing licence therefore removes the theory examination required in the standard route. You must still apply for the new category and meet the relevant age and administrative requirements.
“Practical test only” does not mean that the new licence is issued without an examination. The practical test remains required and must use a motorcycle suitable for the category. The exemption applies to the categories listed by the MIT; do not automatically extend it to every foreign licence, special licence or permit. If your licence has been converted, expired or carries restrictions, ask the motorisation office whether the exemption applies to your case.
Application, motorcycle and preparation
For example, someone with a valid B licence who applies for A2 must document that licence and book the practical test; they cannot simply arrive with a motorcycle. The MIT requires the application and the examination vehicle documents, including its registration certificate. A1 holders can also use the examination route with only the practical test, but should distinguish it from gradual access through a course, which has separate requirements.
Check the category on your licence and gather the information requested by the office or driving school. Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review common road rules through chapters, quizzes, explanations, mistake review and study statistics.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale supports theory revision; the practical test requires preparation on the motorcycle.
Frequently asked questions
With a B licence, do I need to take A2 theory?
The MIT allows B holders to obtain A2 or A by examination with only the practical test, provided the licence is valid and the application is correctly submitted.
Does the theory exemption mean there are no tests?
No. The practical test is still required; the exemption concerns only the theory examination in the MIT route.
