A1 licence: eligible tricycles and agricultural vehicles

An A1 licence can cover tricycles up to 15 kW and some agricultural vehicles within the applicable size and mass limits. Check the vehicle approval and technical data.

What A1 includes

A1 is commonly associated with motorcycles up to 125 cc, 11 kW and 0.1 kW/kg, but it also covers motor tricycles with power no higher than 15 kW. These limits refer to approved technical data. A three-wheeled vehicle is not automatically covered by A1 if it exceeds the threshold or belongs to a different approved category.

A1 also permits some agricultural vehicles within the size and mass limits that apply to motorcycles. To check a particular vehicle, do not rely on its sales name or speed alone. Read its approved category and technical data on the registration document, then compare them with the current definition before using it on public roads.

Check before you ride

First check the category on the registration record, the power and the vehicle dimensions; then check any vehicle-specific or road-specific restrictions. If the data are unclear, ask the licensing office or a qualified professional to identify the category. Rules for a motorcycle do not automatically transfer to an agricultural vehicle or a tricycle with another classification.

If you are taking the A1 test, the requirements for the test vehicle are separate from the vehicles you may ride after the licence is issued. Ask before the test which model will be used and whether an automatic vehicle results in code 78. This helps you distinguish the scope of the licence from the conditions attached to a particular vehicle, rather than relying on a sales description or the number of wheels.
