A1 licence at 16: who signs the application?

An A1 application by a minor also needs a parent’s or guardian’s signature and the current documents listed by MIT.

You can apply for A1 at 16, but applicants under 18 also need a parent’s or guardian’s signature; the candidate must meet the medical and test requirements.

Signing an application as a minor

The minimum age for an A1 licence is 16. If you are not yet 18, a parent or legal guardian must also sign the application under MIT instructions. The adult’s signature completes the administrative request; it does not take the tests for you or give you permission to ride before the process is complete.

Prepare form TT2112, an identity document, your tax code or health card, proof of the medical examination and the required payments. The medical certificate has different validity periods depending on whether an ordinary doctor or a local medical commission carried out the examination. Check the current MIT page before filing. Ask the licensing office whether it needs originals, specific copies or the parent’s presence when the application is submitted.

After applying

A1 covers motorcycles up to 125 cc, 11 kW and 0.1 kW/kg, as well as tricycles up to 15 kW and certain quadricycles. Every applicable limit must be met; a motorcycle does not qualify just because its engine size is small. MIT lists the tests, deadlines and eligible test vehicles on the page for this category.

A parent can help organise receipts and bookings, but the candidate studies and takes the tests under the applicable route. Before choosing a test motorcycle, check its approval, gearbox and test requirements. If you take the test on an automatic vehicle, ask whether code 78 will be added; that code limits riding to automatic vehicles. Keep copies of the application and payment receipts so you can answer any request from the office.
