A2 or A licence: practical test or gradual-access course?
The MIT offers an examination route and a gradual course for A2 and A; age and time holding a licence determine eligibility.
For A2 and A, the MIT provides an examination route and a gradual-access course without an examination. The minimum age and how long you have held the previous motorcycle category determine which route is available.
Two routes, with different steps
The examination route follows the ordinary licence application and includes a practical test. Depending on the category you already hold, you may be exempt from the theory test; the MIT lists A1, B1, B and BE holders for obtaining A2 or A by practical examination only. The gradual route avoids the examination but requires a specific course at a driving school or authorised instruction centre. It is a separate application, with a learner’s permit issued for that route.
Eligibility depends on age and the category held. Gradual access to A2 requires at least 18 years and A1 held for two years. Gradual access to A requires at least 20 years and A2 held for two years. For direct access to A by examination, the MIT lists age 24, or age 20 with A2 held for two years. Check the current MIT pages because these requirements are not interchangeable.
Compare timing and preparation
A candidate who is 18 and has held A1 for two years may consider the gradual A2 course; someone seeking A2 by examination follows that application and test process. A person aged 20 with two years of A2 may choose the A examination route or ask about gradual access to A. The course can take scheduled training time, while an examination depends on preparation and appointment availability. The MIT does not promise a fixed completion date for either route.
Before enrolling, tell the driving school your age, exact licence category and its issue date. Ask which application and learner’s permit will be used, what documents are needed and which motorcycle requirements apply. Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review common road rules through chapters, quizzes, explanations, mistake review and study statistics.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps with theory revision; the course, practical training and examination are separate official steps.
Frequently asked questions
Is the gradual course simply a practical test with another name?
No. It is a structured training route with a separate application and course requirements; the examination route requires the applicable practical test.
Can I use a B licence to access A2 gradually?
The gradual route from A1 to A2 requires A1 held for at least two years. A B licence may exempt a candidate from theory in the examination route, which is a different procedure.
