Category A without an examination: when A2 and a course are enough

Gradual access to A requires age 20, A2 held for two years and the course required by the MIT.

You can obtain category A without an examination through gradual access if you are at least 20, have held A2 for two years and complete the specific course with an authorised provider.

Age and time holding A2

The gradual route to category A is available to applicants aged at least 20 who have held A2 for at least two years. The holding period starts from the date the A2 category was issued, not when you began practising or enrolled at a driving school. Check the issue date on your licence and confirm that the entitlement is valid. If the licence has been converted or carries restrictions, ask the motorisation office to confirm how the requirement is assessed.

This route avoids an examination but still requires training. The MIT requires a specific course at a driving school or authorised driving instruction centre. The school submits the application through the Portale dell’Automobilista and requests the learner’s permit for gradual access. A learner’s permit issued for the category A examination cannot be used instead.

Course, motorcycle and completion

The course includes technical motorcycle checks, road-safety preparation, specific manoeuvres and riding in traffic, following MIT requirements. The motorcycle used for training must meet category A course requirements, which differ from the minimum vehicle for an examination. Ask the school what documents to bring, how the sessions are organised and which motorcycle will be used. After training, the school transmits the certificate and supporting documents for ministerial checks.

For example, a 19-year-old who has held A2 for three years still cannot complete the gradual A route until turning 20. A 20-year-old with A2 for one year must wait until the two-year period is complete. Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review theory; the gradual A course takes place through an authorised school or centre.
