Moving from A2 to A: examination or gradual course?

With A2 held for two years and the required age, you can take the category A practical test or follow the MIT course.

You can move from A2 to A from age 20 after holding A2 for at least two years, either through the practical examination or the MIT gradual course.

The examination and gradual routes differ

The MIT provides two ways to progress from A2 to category A. The examination route requires you to be at least 20 and to have held A2 for at least two years. The gradual route without an examination has the same age and holding-period requirements, plus a specific training course. Reaching the age threshold is not enough by itself: check when your A2 licence was issued and when the two-year period ends.

For the examination route, you submit an application and take the practical test under the office’s procedure. If you have already passed or are exempt from theory, that does not remove the practical test. The gradual route instead runs through a driving school or authorised instruction centre and uses a separate application. Its learner’s permit must be issued for gradual access; a permit issued for the examination application cannot be substituted.

Choose a route and confirm eligibility

If you are 22 and have held A2 for three years, you may meet the age and holding-period conditions for either route. If you are 19, you cannot yet access category A even if you have held A2 for more than two years. Ask the school which documents and motorcycle are needed for the chosen procedure, since course and examination vehicle requirements may differ. The gradual route is a formal course with required content and records, not simply ordinary riding lessons.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you revise shared theory rules; the course and practical training require the MIT procedure and an authorised school.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get category A immediately after holding A2 for two years?

No. You must also be at least 20 and follow an approved route: practical examination or gradual access with a course. The office checks your documents.

Can I use a standard category A learner’s permit for the gradual course?

No. The MIT says the course requires the learner’s permit issued after the school submits the gradual-access application.
