Gradual access to A2 or A: application, learner permit and motorcycle

Gradual access requires the relevant age and licence history, plus an authorised course and the required application steps.

Gradual access from A1 to A2 or A2 to A requires the prescribed age, licence history and an authorised course. A learner permit is not automatic: ask the licensing office how to apply and which vehicle details to provide.

Eligibility and application

The gradual route allows eligible riders to move to the next motorcycle category by completing a course instead of taking the ordinary practical test. For A1 to A2, the rider must be at least 18 and have held A1 for at least two years. For A2 to A, the rider must be at least 20 and have held A2 for at least two years. The course must be provided by a driving school or authorised centre under the conditions published by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MIT). Age and time holding the lower category are separate requirements, so check both before enrolling.

The application follows the procedure for obtaining the higher category through the competent licensing office. Do not assume that the paperwork is identical to an ordinary test application: ask the school or office which forms, medical certificate, payments and course evidence apply to your case. If your licence is expired, suspended or has codes, clarify first whether your entitlement and the relevant holding period are recognised. Keep payment receipts and the course certificate until the licence record has been updated.

Motorcycle choice and study

The motorcycle used for a course or any practice must meet the category requirements and the centre’s training conditions. A motorcycle that you can already ride under your current licence may not be suitable for an A2 or A course. Before booking, ask about engine capacity, power, transmission and vehicle availability. A change from automatic to manual transmission may affect codes on the licence; do not assume that gradual access removes an existing restriction.

A course teaches practical skills with an instructor and suitable motorcycle. Theory study has a different role: it helps review signs, priority rules and safe behaviour in traffic. For example, knowing quiz answers does not prove that the required course has been completed. Once the higher category is issued, check the new licence and any codes before riding a more powerful motorcycle. For an individual case, the licensing office can examine your record and confirm the applicable procedure.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review theory through quizzes, explanations, mistake review and study statistics; practical training remains with an authorised centre.

Frequently asked questions

Is a learner permit issued as soon as I reach the minimum age?

No. You must also have held the lower category for two years and complete the required application and authorised course.

Can I use a different motorcycle from the course vehicle?

That depends on the course rules and vehicle suitability. Ask the authorised centre first; the motorcycle must meet the category and training requirements.
