Category B and operating machinery: which limits to check

Category B may cover non-exceptional operating machinery, but check the machine’s classification, mass and use.

Category B may allow you to drive non-exceptional operating machinery in the cases covered by MIT rules. Check the vehicle classification and documents: an exceptional machine or one with different characteristics may require another category and additional permits.

Identify the classification first

The name used on a worksite or in a catalogue is not enough to determine the required licence. “Operating machinery” is a technical and legal classification; the vehicle category and characteristics appear in its circulation documents. MIT includes non-exceptional operating machinery within category B in applicable cases. Do not extend that statement to an exceptional machine, a different special vehicle or a trailer combination without checking the relevant rules.

Consult the vehicle certificate to check the category, maximum authorised mass, dimensions and endorsements. Actual mass at the time of a journey does not replace maximum authorised mass; towing mass is another figure. If the machine exceeds ordinary limits or is classified as exceptional, additional requirements may apply, such as a higher licence category or a road-use permit. Ask the UMC to confirm the specific case if the paperwork is incomplete.

Licence and road-use permits are separate

Holding the correct category does not automatically allow you to travel everywhere. Operating machinery may be subject to route, size, weight, speed and permit restrictions, especially where it is exceptional. Check the route and requirements before entering a public road, and follow the signs and safety equipment rules for that machine.

For example, an ordinary operating machine that falls within the limits for B may be driven by a B licence holder, but a wider or heavier version may fall under exceptional-vehicle rules. Towing also changes the mass and configuration to be assessed. Before moving between worksites, compare the licence, machine documents, any permits and insurance conditions. For a modified or imported vehicle, do not rely on a seller’s statement alone: check the approval and official endorsements.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale lets you review categories and rules through study chapters, exam quizzes, mistake review and progress statistics. Still check the classification and documents for the operating machine you intend to drive.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive any machine described as operating machinery with B?

No. MIT refers to non-exceptional machines in applicable cases. Check the machine’s classification, mass and other characteristics.

Is category B enough to use an exceptional machine on the road?

Not necessarily. Additional licence requirements and road-use permits may apply; check the specific machine and route.
