How long does a Category B provisional licence last, and what can you do with it?
For Category B, the provisional licence lasts 12 months and allows up to three practical tests. The first test can be taken after at least one month.
For Category B, the provisional licence lasts 12 months and allows up to 3 practical tests. You must wait at least one month before the first test; all three must fall within MIT’s 11-month window starting the month after you pass the theory test.
When it is issued and how long it lasts
The provisional licence, which authorises driving practice, is issued for Category B after you pass the theory test. MIT’s Category B information page allows three practical tests within eleven months, starting from the month after you pass the theory test and receive the provisional licence. Theory and practical tests have different time windows: note the dates on your own application and follow the dates given by the UMC. Do not calculate them using another candidate’s calendar.
A provisional licence is not a temporary full licence and does not let you drive alone. During practice, follow the rules on the accompanying driver, vehicle, signs and other requirements in Article 122 of the Highway Code. Additional rules and certified-lesson requirements apply to motorway, extra-urban and night driving. The rules are being updated: Decree 294/2025 introduces a new eight-hour scheme, but it takes effect only when the executive decree on the platform enters into force. The transitional rules in the decree apply to earlier provisional licences.
How to practise without mixing up the rules
Before you start, read the conditions for your category and make sure your accompanying driver meets them. The vehicle must be suitable, insured, roadworthy and marked as required. In a driving school, the instructor and vehicle are subject to professional requirements; with a private accompanying driver, their presence and seating position are regulated. Ask before setting off, especially if you plan to drive on a motorway or carry passengers.
Keep the provisional licence and lesson certificates, check its expiry date and remaining attempts, and book well in advance. If it expires, do not assume an extension is automatic: contact the UMC to find out whether you need a renewal or new application. If you miss or fail a test, ask how it affects your remaining attempts and whether your lesson certificate remains valid. MIT’s Category B page gives practical information on deadlines and conditions, while the Highway Code sets the general rules.
