I passed the theory test: when can I start practising?

The provisional licence is issued after you pass the theory test. Check your receipt and the rules for your category.

Passing the theory test opens the practice stage: the provisional licence follows once the result is recorded. Before driving, make sure the authorisation is active and valid.

When does the authorisation start?

The provisional licence is not issued when you submit your application: you receive it after passing the theory test. MIT links the recorded result to the right to practise under the rules for your category. Before driving or riding, make sure you have received the document or official receipt confirming your authorisation, with the correct date and category.

Do not rely only on a result given verbally or shown on an unofficial screen. If the system does not yet show your provisional licence, contact your driving school or the UMC and ask when it will be available. The authorisation states the limits and conditions for practice, which may include an accompanying driver, vehicle, signs or specific restrictions.

Check the category and validity

Read the category, issue date and expiry date on the provisional licence. For many categories, MIT specifies a six-month period, but the rules and number of tests depend on the current procedure. Book the practical test early and leave time for lessons. If you spot an error, do not correct it by hand: ask the issuing office to amend it.

The provisional licence only allows practice for the category you applied for; it does not authorise you to drive any vehicle. Category B has rules on supervision and signs; motorcycles, lorries and buses have different vehicles, equipment and conditions. Read the MIT page for your category and follow your instructor’s guidance.

Your first lesson

Arrange your first drive in a place and conditions suited to your experience, using a roadworthy and insured vehicle. Check that the accompanying driver meets the requirements and that the provisional licence is available in the vehicle when required. For professional training or higher categories, some lessons must be completed with a school and instructor.

Do not treat a provisional licence as permission to drive alone or carry passengers beyond the specific rules. If you are unsure about motorways, passengers, times or road types, ask your driving school before setting off. The learner and accompanying driver remain responsible.

After the test

After passing the theory test, plan your lessons and practical tests well in advance. Keep track of the attempts available and the expiry date, then check the test date with the Motorist Portal or your school. If you cannot get a test slot in time, ask the UMC what options are available; a calendar delay does not automatically extend your provisional licence.
