Theory test
What is the category B theory test like?
The category B test is a computer-based true-or-false quiz. Learn the format and how to prepare for the full test.
The category B theory test is taken at a computer and uses true-or-false statements. Study the current official syllabus rather than outdated test sheets.
Test format
For category B, the theory test consists of a computer-based sheet of 30 statements to mark true or false, to be completed in 20 minutes. You pass with no more than three mistakes. These rules come from the Ministerial Decree of 27 October 2021 and the MIT circular implementing it in December 2021; do not confuse them with the old format of 40 questions in 30 minutes. The Portale dell’Automobilista publishes official quizzes for categories AB and other lists, which you can use to check that your study material is current.
At the test, follow the examiner’s instructions and answer on your assigned computer. Read each statement in full: a negative word or condition can change its meaning. When you finish, use the review screen to check any answers you want to revisit while time remains. Unanswered items may count against you, so leave a little time to review the sheet. Do not change an answer out of anxiety unless you have a reason to do so.
How to study the syllabus
The quiz draws from an official question bank, but memorising isolated answers can leave gaps in your understanding of how rules fit together. Study by topic: signs, right of way, behaviour, safety, documents and the other syllabus chapters. After each practice test, write down why an answer is true or false, review the rule, then try more questions on that subject. Check that your material uses the current question list: older sheets may use a different format or wording.
If you are eligible for accommodations for specific learning disorders (DSA), ask the Motor Vehicle Office in good time which certificates and tools are available. The MIT circular confirms specific arrangements for candidates with certification, including extra time or audio files under the relevant decree. Do not wait until test day to mention a need: tell the office when you submit your application and ask how to document it. Other language or accessibility options may depend on the category and the instructions for your session.
The day before and in the test room
- Check the appointment notice, identity document and time set by the UMC.
- Arrive early and listen to the instructions before starting.
- Take a full practice test to check your pace, not to learn new rules at the last minute.
