What to wear for a motorcycle practical test
Full-face helmet, gloves, protective jacket, closed shoes and long trousers: the protective gear required by the MIT.
For a motorcycle practical test, the MIT requires protective riding gear throughout: a full-face helmet, gloves, a jacket with protectors, closed shoes, long trousers and knee protection.
The required gear
Candidates must wear the specified protective gear throughout the practical test. The MIT circular on A1, A2 and A tests lists a full-face helmet, gloves, a jacket with elbow and shoulder protectors, closed shoes, long trousers and knee protection. These are not decorative accessories: they help reduce injuries in a fall and allow the examiner to assess your ability safely.
Put on your gear before you start and check that it fits, is intact and fastened correctly. A helmet that is too loose, an unsecured strap or gloves that slip on the controls can affect your riding. Make sure your jacket does not restrict your arms and shoulders and that the protectors stay in the right place as you move.
Check the helmet and protectors
The helmet must be full-face and approved for road use. Check the shell, visor, strap and fastening system, and make sure it has not suffered an impact that could compromise its structure. It should stay secure without creating excessive pressure points. Do not turn up with a borrowed helmet if you do not know its history or cannot adjust it properly.
Gloves and footwear must let you feel the brake, clutch and gear controls. Shoes must be closed and stable; long trousers and knee protectors cover your legs during manoeuvres and the road test. Ask your driving school whether gear is provided or you must bring your own. Do not assume that a lightweight city jacket meets the requirements.
On test day
Arrive early enough to put on and adjust every item without rushing. Bring the documents in your appointment notice, your learner’s permit and any extra gear required by the test centre or school. If you do not have a required item, say so before the session: you may not be allowed to start and could lose your booking.
The examiner assesses your ability to control the motorcycle as well as your road behaviour. Correct clothing is a condition for taking the test; it does not guarantee that you will pass. Follow instructions and do not alter protectors or accessories just to make them look or feel more comfortable.
Practise in the same gear
Wear the helmet, gloves and clothing you plan to use for the test during practice, so you get used to the visibility, fit and movement. If you change equipment at the last minute, check it while stationary before getting on the motorcycle. If you are unsure about approval, ask your instructor to check the item and consult the MIT requirement in the circular.
