Driving test
What to bring to your category D driving test
A category D test checklist: appointment notice, learner’s permit, identity document and a bus that meets the Ministry’s requirements.
Category D candidates must follow the UMC appointment notice and arrive with a valid learner’s permit and a category D vehicle that meets the MIT’s published specifications.
Prepare the documents for your test
The final document list is the one in your Motor Vehicle Office appointment notice. Prepare a valid identity document, your category D learner’s permit and booking confirmation; bring any receipts or certificates required by your test centre too. If a driving school is handling the application, ask which documents it will submit and which you need to carry. A photo of your identity document on your phone may not replace the valid document you are required to present.
Check that your learner’s permit is valid and that your details and category are correct. If you have restrictions, the examiner must be able to verify that the vehicle meets the required adaptations. Do not try to explain your situation for the first time on test day: ask the UMC in advance how it will be handled.
Confirm the test bus
For category D, the MIT specifies minimum vehicle features, including category D, required length and width, the ability to reach the specified speed, ABS and a tachograph. These requirements distinguish a category D bus from a D1 minibus. Ask the school or vehicle owner which vehicle will be presented and check its registration document; a bus being available does not mean that it meets the requirements.
If you are taking the test as a private candidate, check that your name is on the test list and that a vehicle is assigned to your session. Get a contact number in advance in case of delays or breakdowns. The MIT also publishes application documents; local instructions set the access arrangements and time for each session.
Arrive prepared
Arrive on time, wear comfortable clothing and review the vehicle’s safety checks with your instructor. The test assesses your ability to drive a large vehicle and carry passengers safely; braking distance, mirrors, seating position and awareness of passengers all matter. An administrative checklist cannot predict the result or replace driving practice with an instructor.
If the bus does not arrive or is considered unsuitable, ask the examiner or office staff how the session will be recorded and whether you need to book again. Do not agree to use a different vehicle without checking its category and requirements. Keep any communication from the test centre.
Final check
The day before, confirm the place, time, vehicle, documents, learner’s permit validity and payments. If anything does not match, contact the UMC or school immediately. For professional transport, remember that the passenger CQC and category D licence are separate qualifications: passing the category D test does not automatically complete the CQC route.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use a minibus for the category D test?
Only if it is actually a category D vehicle that meets the requirements; the word “minibus” alone does not establish this.
Do I take the category D and passenger CQC tests together?
No. The category D test and the CQC exam are separate procedures, even if they can be coordinated.
