Driving test
Driving test for category C: what does the candidate have to pass?
Category C requires theory and a practical test in a suitable vehicle. Check the requirements and any CQC route with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MIT).
The standard category C route includes theory and practical tests. Age, test vehicle and CQC requirements depend on the route you choose and how you will use the licence.
Theory and requirements
A category C licence authorises you to drive vehicles used to carry goods that exceed category B limits, within the definitions set by the Italian Highway Code. Candidates take theory and practical tests, unless an exemption or a different procedure applies because of a licence they already hold. The MIT page for categories C1–C sets out age, documents, tests and vehicle requirements. The standard minimum age for category C is 21; it may be lowered to 18 if the candidate completes the required CQC qualification route before the practical test. Always check the route that applies to you.
Theory for the higher categories is separate from the category B quiz: the syllabus, test paper and procedure are set by specific rules. If you already hold a licence, ask your local Motor Vehicle Office (UMC) whether it changes or reduces the tests. Medical fitness also matters: heavy-vehicle requirements may involve different assessments and validity periods from an ordinary licence. Before paying the application fee, check which documents are required and whether you need a single-doctor medical certificate or an assessment by the Local Medical Commission (CML).
The practical test in a heavy vehicle
The driving test assesses preparation for safe driving, vehicle control, manoeuvres and road use. The vehicle must match the category and the current technical requirements published by the MIT, including the specified mass and performance. Before the test, check who will provide the lorry and whether it is equipped to meet the required standards. An unsuitable vehicle can prevent the test from going ahead or require a new booking; do not rely only on a specification sheet found on a forum.
With your instructor, practise judging the vehicle’s size, using mirrors, allowing for braking distances and manoeuvring in tight spaces. These skills do not automatically transfer from a car. If you intend to drive professionally in goods transport, a category C licence alone may not be enough: check whether the job requires a goods CQC and which course or test you need. A driving licence and a professional qualification are separate credentials. After the test, read the result and UMC instructions and keep the documents in case you need another session.
Before you start

Frequently asked questions
At what age can I get a category C licence?
The MIT normally sets the minimum age at 21. A specific route may allow you to qualify at 18 together with the goods CQC qualification. Check the current requirements.
Is a category C licence enough to work as a lorry driver?
Not always. Professional goods transport may also require a goods CQC, depending on the work and any applicable exemptions.
