Driving a goods vehicle privately: do you need a CQC?

Category C covers the vehicle; a CQC requirement depends on the transport's purpose and the statutory conditions.

A goods CQC does not depend on truck mass alone: it is required for professional transport covered by the rules, subject to specific exemptions. Calling a use “private” does not settle the facts.

“Private” does not settle the question

The driving licence and CQC answer different questions. Category C authorises a vehicle in that category; the goods CQC qualifies a driver for professional transport in the situations covered by the rules. If you drive a goods vehicle for work, do not assume CQC is optional just because you own the vehicle, it belongs to your business or it carries your own tools.

The rules provide exemptions for defined situations and purposes, such as some transport that is not the main activity of the driver or employer. Whether an exemption applies depends on its legal conditions and the facts: what is carried, why, as part of which activity, and in what driving role. Even an occasional journey may require CQC if it falls within professional transport subject to the requirement.

Describe the actual case before driving

To assess personal use, describe the activity instead of relying on the “private” label: is the transport connected with work, a service or a commercial activity? Is the driver carrying goods for a business or solely for a personal need? The law has exemptions, but it is unsafe to extend them to every own-account journey. The required licence, vehicle mass and technical characteristics still apply.

If you use a category C truck to move materials as part of your work, ask the employer or competent office whether the conditions for a specific CQC exemption are met and keep information describing your duties. For a personal move of belongings, assess its actual purpose and context before concluding that CQC is unnecessary. Frequently asked questions

Can I drive without CQC if the truck is registered in my name?

Ownership alone does not establish an exemption. The transport's nature and purpose and the statutory conditions matter.

Is carrying my company's tools always exempt?

Not necessarily. Check whether the transport is ancillary to the activity and whether every condition of an applicable exemption is met.
