CQC and driving licence: how to distinguish the two qualifications

The driving licence identifies the vehicles you may drive; a CQC documents a professional qualification for specified transport.

A driving licence and CQC are separate titles: the licence covers a vehicle category, while CQC qualifies a driver for professional goods or passenger transport when required.

Two documents, two functions

A driving licence lists the vehicle categories its holder may drive and any restrictions. A heavy goods vehicle may require C or CE; a bus or minibus may require D, D1 or an E extension. These categories depend on the vehicle and trailer, not on the job being performed.

The Driver Qualification Card (CQC) is instead linked to professional goods or passenger transport in cases specified by the rules. Goods and passenger qualifications are distinct. A driver may therefore hold the correct licence for a vehicle and still need a CQC for the service. The Ministry lists a driving licence and CQC as separate documents and qualifications; they are not two names for the same title.

Check both for the actual activity

When checking credentials, verify licence categories and validity separately from the transport type, professional activity and any CQC exemptions. A driver with C may drive a vehicle in that category, but professional goods transport may also require a goods CQC. A D driver may operate a bus in that category, but certain professional passenger services require a passenger CQC. Exemptions have specific conditions and should be assessed against the actual journey.

If a job includes different duties, do not assume one CQC covers everything: assess the transport performed and the category of each vehicle. An employer, driving school or competent office can point to the applicable requirement, but needs an accurate description of the service. Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps study C, D and CQC quizzes with explanations and error review. It cannot validate official documents or decide whether a professional exemption applies to you.

Frequently asked questions

No. They have separate functions. Driving the vehicle requires its licence category, and the professional activity may require a qualification.

Does one CQC title cover both goods and passenger transport?

Goods and passenger qualifications are distinct. Check which one matches the professional activity you perform.
