Costs and timeframes
How much does a category B driving licence cost? What to budget for
MIT fees for category B are €42.40 for the application and theory test plus €16 for the practical test: €58.40 total, excluding the medical visit, lessons and test car.
MIT fees for category B total €58.40: €42.40 for the application and theory test (N067), plus €16 for the practical test (N019). Medical visits, lessons, driving school and the test car cost extra and vary.
What makes up the total
There is no single nationwide all-inclusive price for a category B licence. The total combines administrative fees and services that vary by location and by the route you choose. Ask about PagoPA payments for applications and tests, the medical visit, enrolment and any theory course, driving lessons, required certified practice, use of a car for the practical test, and any fees for retaking tests. MIT publishes Motor Vehicle Office fees; ask locally for the cost of driving-school services and medical visits, and note the date of each quote.
When comparing two quotes, ask for a total that clearly lists what is included and what remains extra. Find out how many lessons are included, how much an additional lesson costs, whether the test car is included and what happens if the test is postponed. A low introductory price may leave out necessary items; a larger package is not automatically good value if it includes services you will not use. Do not add figures from pages published in different years: fees and commercial terms change.
Build your own estimate
Make a simple table with one line for each item: official fees, medical visit, driving-school package or private-candidate administration, lessons, required practice, test vehicle and a possible retake. Add the source and date, and mark each amount as fixed or variable. This lets you update your estimate without presenting an invented average as a guaranteed price. If a medical condition requires assessment by a local medical commission (CML), ask the health facility about costs and tests; the cost of an ordinary medical visit cannot be applied to every case.
Applying as a private candidate may avoid some parts of a driving-school package, but it does not remove every expense or the required practice. MIT currently specifies at least six certified hours for a standard category B licence. Ministerial Decree 294/2025 introduces an eight-hour programme that takes effect only after a subsequent director’s decree on the platform. Since the applicable rules depend on the date the authorisation is issued, ask your UMC which certificate will be required. The most useful figure is a quote for your province and circumstances, not a nationwide amount without details.
Questions to ask when requesting a quote
- Which administrative fees are included, and which will I have to pay separately?
- How many lessons and certified practice sessions does the package include?
- Are the test car and a retake included?
- Is the quote current, and how long is it valid?

Frequently asked questions
Can I find an exact price online?
The published MIT fees total €58.40: €42.40 for the application and theory test plus €16 for the practical test. Your total will be higher because medical visits, driving-school fees, lessons and test cars have local prices. Compare quotes that include the same items.
Does applying as a private candidate include all required lessons?
No. Handling the application yourself does not automatically include certified practice. Ask a driving school how the required sessions are provided and documented.
