Bus-only lane: who is allowed to use it?

You may use a lane reserved for buses only if the sign and local order permit your vehicle. Do not assume taxis, motorcycles, electric vehicles or service vehicles can enter without checking the stated exceptions.

Read the sign and its exceptions

Article 7 allows municipalities to reserve roads or individual lanes for vehicles used in public transport. The sign identifies the lane and may specify allowed vehicle categories, hours or restrictions; the local order sets the conditions. A bus symbol is not an invitation for every vehicle that carries passengers.

Check the sign at the beginning of the lane and at each intersection where you might enter it. If a panel allows taxis, bicycles or a specific class of vehicle, confirm your vehicle and service fit that wording. Rules can differ from one road to another even within the same municipality. If in doubt, stay out of the lane and consult the local authority’s official mobility information.

The powertrain alone does not give permission

Being electric or hybrid does not automatically authorise use of a bus lane. Similarly, an off-duty taxi, motorcycle or car carrying several people may be excluded if the local rule does not permit it. Some municipalities issue permits or define exceptions for specific categories: check requirements, registration, hours and duration before entering.

If a camera or officer issues a notice, check which municipal order and sign applied at that place and time. Keep permits and registration confirmations. A bus lane may be reserved all day or only during particular hours; read a time panel together with the main sign. Do not use the lane simply to pass a queue: wait until an explicit exception applies to your vehicle.
