Getting your licence
Category AM licence: documents and application steps
Documents for an AM licence, age requirements and the steps from application and theory test to learner’s permit and practical test.
To apply for an AM licence, submit form TT2112, a medical fitness certificate, identity document and PagoPA receipts. After the theory test, you receive a learner’s permit and book the practical test using the type of vehicle you selected.
Who needs an AM licence
Category AM covers mopeds and light quadricycles that meet the required technical limits, including a maximum speed of 45 km/h. The minimum age to obtain it is 14. Carrying a passenger depends on the vehicle’s approval for two people and the driver’s age: the MIT says the driver must have turned 16. An AM licence obtained at 14 is not automatically recognised for driving at that age in every EU country.
The practical test can be taken on a two- or three-wheeled moped or a light quadricycle. You must state and select the vehicle type and transmission type in your application. Prepare on the vehicle you selected, because familiarity with the controls and balance varies between types.
Documents to prepare
The MIT lists form TT2112, an identity document, tax code and receipt for the medical fitness examination. Attach the PagoPA payments required for the theory test to the application; pay the practical-test fee when booking, according to current rates. Applicants under 18 also need a parent’s or guardian’s identity document, and the application must be signed by both the candidate and their legal representative.
Check the date on the medical certificate: the MIT sets different deadlines depending on the type of doctor or commission. Download forms from the Motorist Portal and consult the PagoPA guide before paying; do not reuse payment slips from old applications. If a representative submits the application or the applicant is a non-EU/EEA citizen, check the additional documents listed on the same ministry page.
From the theory test to the practical test
The process includes a theory test and a driving test. Once you pass the theory test, the UMC issues your learner’s permit: only then can you practise under the rules and arrange the practical test. The MIT specifies the number of attempts and how long the application remains valid; check the official page when you apply, because older guides may describe conditions that no longer apply.
As you prepare, study right of way, road signs, protective equipment and your responsibilities to other road users. On the vehicle, practise starting, stopping and maintaining control safely with a qualified person and in compliance with the rules for practice. Ask the Motorization Office how to book the test and what requirements the vehicle must meet. Choose the vehicle carefully when applying, even though the MIT allows you to specify or change it by the time you book the practical test.
Final application check
Before submitting the file, check the name, date of birth, tax code and category on every document. Keep digital copies of the receipts and a copy of the signed application. If anything is missing, ask the office whether and how you can add it; do not assume you can retrieve a document at the practical test.
