Requirements
Motorhomes over 3,500 kg: do you need category C1?
A motorhome over 3,500 kg may require C1: check maximum authorised mass and passenger seats in the vehicle documents.
A motor caravan with a maximum authorised mass above 3,500 kg and up to 7,500 kg, designed to carry no more than eight passengers in addition to the driver, requires category C1. Ordinary category B is insufficient above its limit.
Maximum authorised mass is what matters
The actual weight of the motorhome on a particular trip does not by itself determine the licence category. Check the maximum authorised mass shown in the vehicle registration certificate. Category B covers motor vehicles up to 3,500 kg; C1 covers vehicles above 3,500 kg and up to 7,500 kg, other than D1 and D vehicles, designed to carry no more than eight people in addition to the driver. MIT lists heavy motor caravans as examples of C1 vehicles.
So a motorhome with a maximum authorised mass of 3,800 kg normally requires C1, even if its actual unladen weight is much lower and you travel with little water or luggage. A vehicle at or below 3,500 kg remains within the B mass range if it meets the other requirements. Do not confuse unladen mass, actual loaded mass and maximum authorised mass: they are different figures, and the category threshold concerns the last one.
Check seats, towing and endorsements
Also check the number of people shown in the vehicle documents. C1 allows up to eight passengers in addition to the driver; a vehicle designed for more people may require another category. If you tow a trailer, C1 allows one with a maximum authorised mass no greater than 750 kg. Above that threshold, check the combination and the category with the relevant E extension.
Some C1 licences are issued with code 97, which limits driving to vehicles not subject to tachograph obligations. This code does not change the 7,500 kg ceiling, but it does restrict which vehicles you can drive. Read the category and codes on your licence and compare them with the motorhome’s use. For an imported vehicle, modifications or unclear data, ask the UMC to interpret the approval before planning a trip. Checking the documents avoids relying on sales descriptions such as “light motorhome” or “B licence friendly.”
Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers chapter-based study, exam quizzes, review of incorrect answers and progress statistics to help you review licence categories and mass limits. For a motorhome, always check the mass and seats listed in its own documents.
Frequently asked questions
If the motorhome weighs under 3,500 kg today, can I use B when its certificate says 3,800 kg?
No. The category is based on the maximum authorised mass in the documents, not the actual weight on a particular trip.
Does C1 allow any trailer?
No. C1 allows a trailer with a maximum authorised mass up to 750 kg. Above that, check the appropriate extended category.
