Getting your licence
Already hold A1 or B? When B1 requires only the practical test
MIT provides routes without a new theory test for some existing licences; check your entitlement and procedure before applying for B1.
For some existing categories, including A1 and B, MIT provides access to B1 by taking only the practical test. This is not automatic issuance: a valid entitlement, application, medical fitness and a passed driving test are still required.
When theory is not repeated
The Ministry’s B1 guidance describes cases where holders of certain categories may obtain B1 by taking only the practical test. The listed entitlements include A1 and B. This exemption concerns repeating the theory exam in the relevant route; it does not remove the application or practical test, and it does not automatically convert one licence into another. Before booking, check that your category is on MIT’s list and that your licence is valid.
An individual check may be needed if the licence has expired, been suspended, converted from a foreign entitlement or carries restrictions. For example, having passed a B theory test in the past is not always the same as currently holding a valid B licence. Show your document to the driving school or licensing office and ask which procedure applies. The minimum age, medical fitness and B1 application documents still matter; B1’s minimum age is 16.
The practical test is still required
Without a new theory test, you must still prepare for the practical test using a quadricycle that meets the test requirements. An A1 or B licence does not by itself show that you can operate a B1 vehicle’s controls. Practise with an instructor, learn the vehicle’s dimensions and rehearse the required manoeuvres. Confirm in advance that the model is approved in the correct category and ask whether the test transmission affects licence codes.
Theory review may still help even when you are exempt from repeating the exam: priority rules, signs and road behaviour remain relevant. Quizzes and explanations do not replace practice and cannot guarantee the result. Bring the requested documents on test day and keep confirmation of the route selected. If the office rejects an exemption, ask which licence or condition is missing and resolve it before paying for another test session.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale lets you review theory chapters and quizzes, read explanations and revisit mistakes and statistics; the practical test requires vehicle training.
Frequently asked questions
Can my B licence exempt me from B1 theory?
MIT lists a practical-only route for B holders, but confirm that your licence is valid and the current procedure applies to you.
Does A1 or B give me B1 without further steps?
No. You must apply, meet the requirements and pass the practical test in a suitable B1 vehicle.
