Hybrid cars for new drivers: check the registration number
A hybrid badge is not enough to decide whether a car is allowed: check its registration and the applicable official limits.
To find out whether a particular hybrid car falls within new-driver limits, use the Ministry of Transport (MIT) and Portale dell’Automobilista registration checker. For M1 plug-in vehicles, the 105 kW cap also applies, alongside the 75 kW-per-tonne limit.
Do not rely on the word hybrid
Hybrid can describe different technologies: mild hybrid, full hybrid and plug-in hybrid are not interchangeable labels. Applying Article 117 requires the vehicle category, power and power-to-tare ratio under the current rules; for M1 plug-in passenger cars there is also an absolute 105 kW ceiling. Looking only at the electric motor output, engine displacement or a model name does not settle the question.
The practical route is to enter the registration number in the checker provided by MIT and the Portale dell’Automobilista. Its result concerns that identified vehicle and the applicable restrictions. Do not transfer it automatically to a similar model, another trim or a different vehicle in the same range. If the registration is new or the data are missing, compare the vehicle registration certificate with the official service or ask the UMC before driving.
Check the licence category and time window too
Vehicle-power restrictions are separate from the three-year speed limits for new drivers. For a B licence, vehicle restrictions apply for the period set by law and depend on when the licence was obtained; speed restrictions have their own rules and duration. If several people share a car, check eligibility against each driver’s licence and date. A car allowed for one person may not be allowed for another who is still subject to the limits.
Before setting off, confirm the correct registration number, the category shown in the vehicle papers and your own time window. If the result is unclear, do not replace it with a partial calculation from a sales brochure: power and power-to-tare ratio must be assessed using official vehicle data. Keep a note of the check with the car documents so you can repeat it after changing cars or when vehicle data change. A registration-based check is more reliable than a general list of hybrid models because variants may have different approved specifications.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale can help you review chapters on limits, take exam quizzes, revisit wrong answers and track progress statistics. The app supports theory study for category B; eligibility of a particular car must be checked separately using its registration number through the official service.
Frequently asked questions
Does every hybrid car have the additional 105 kW limit?
The plan’s legal rule applies the additional cap to M1 plug-in vehicles. Use the official registration checker to establish whether a particular car falls within the definition and limits.
Can I decide by using the power shown in an advertisement?
No. Different versions can have different approved data. Check the registration number with the MIT service and consult the vehicle documents.
